For Sam

God made trains for children
Who have one-track minds
To give them a prepared way to
Get ahead quickly and smoothly
Not without effort or smoke
Or many flattened coins
Or sidetracks to empty places

But conductors often feel
Untrained and off-track
With the mail-bag out of reach
And the brass ring ungrasped
Unable to tenderly tend
The tender full of fire
And unchanneled pressure

And that’s why there’s a
Wheelhouse of other trains
And a conductor-conducting
Conductor to set us on the
Straight and narrow track
The only one to to the wide
Open plains where trains

Roam wild
